Can I tan while I'm pregnant?
Ultraviolet radiation from tanning equipment does not affect tissue below the surface of the skin including a developing fetus. But pregnant women should be discouraged from tanning because medical professionals do not know how pregnancy is affected by heat created by electrical components. Women in advanced pregnancy could experience difficulty using tanning equipment.

Can I wear contact lenses while tanning?
Tanning can cause contact lenses to become dry. Tanners may want to remove contacts before their session. If this is not possible, moisturizing drops before and after are recommended.

Is it really important to use eyewear while tanning?
Yes. Your cornea, lens, and retina can be damaged from not wearing protective eyewear. Over time these injuries from unprotected UV exposure can lead to loss of night vision and color vision. Your eyes are much more valuable than the few dollars it cost to purchase eyewear.

Is there any danger in tanning nude?
The potential danger lies in the areas of the body such as armpits, back of the legs and buttocks. They can suffer erythema (sunburn) using the same light intensity that only tans the rest of the body.
Can I catch diseases from the tanning units?
No. Tan & Tone America uses a quad-disinfectant.

Why isn't my tan getting darker?
Each of us has a genetic pattern that dictates our natural skin color and how dark our tan can get. Using a tanning lotion immediately before tanning and a moisturizer afterward will help you reach your maximum tanning potential. Also, moving from entry level to upgrade tanning units will also help you get as dark as possible. Don't forget to use a tanning sticker to actually see your results. Remember, when building your base tan, consistency is the key.

I have reached a point where I can't get any darker. What can I do?
If you are using a tanning product and have been using upgrade equipment, you have reached a "tanning plateau." To increase magnification and intensification properties, it is suggested to move from a tanning product used to stimulate melanin and build a base tan to one that penetrates the skin surface with selective oils, vitamins, minerals and amino acids for dark tanning. Often tingle products, which produce a reddening and a warming sensation by increasing the circulation of the top layer of skin, will tan even dark tans past the plateau.

My face and legs don't tan as well as the rest of my body. What should I do?
Moist skin tans better than dry skin. The face and legs are naturally low in moisture and become dryer with normal activities. It is important to keep these areas constantly hydrated during the tanning process. There are several indoor tanning products that are specifically formulated for hard to tan areas. Don't forget about the 20 minute bed with facial tanners and the Classic Leg Tanner.

Why is there a smell of skin while tanning?
A chemical reaction occurs when your body is exposed to ultraviolet light, through either indoor or outdoor tanning. According to dermatologists this is normal and a shower will remove the odor.
Why do I sometimes sweat while tanning?
Sweating is the body's natural cooling system; it is perfectly normal for the body to respond by sweating during tanning.

What are the white patches on the shoulder blades and above the buttocks?
White patches in those areas are called pressure points. They are caused by the pressure from the body as it reclines on a hard surface. This pressure inhibits the flow of blood through that area of the skin. Since blood carries oxygen which is essential to the tanning process, this area cannot tan. Periodic body shifting during tanning will take care of the pressure points. The stand up Sun Capsules are also a great way to eliminate pressure points along with the MagicTan spray booth.

Isn't it true you need to get one good burn to start a tan?
No. A sunburn us a totally different process of the skin. Sunburn results when the amount of UV exposure exceeds the skins natural tanning ability, sending an increase in blood flow to the affected area in an attempt to repair damage. Burning yourself is never OK. Burning does not equal tanning. When you burn yourself, you not only set back the tanning process, but you expose yourself to several potential problems, such as: premature wrinkling, uneven blotching patches on the skin, deprive your body of the positive effects of the sun.

To shower or not to shower?
Heat from the shower opens pores and enables the skin to breathe and take in oxygen vital for the tanning process. Showering also washes away dirt and dead skin cells which could filter ultraviolet penetration when you tan. Showering also allows lotions to penetrate better. Dry skin does not tan as well as moist skin. After tanning you should wait a short period of time before showering to allow moisturizers from the tanning lotions to absorb into the skin.

What are sun spots caused from?
Sunspots are caused by a skin condition known as Tinea Versicolor. A microscopic fungus from the scalp falls onto the arms, shoulders or other parts of the body, thus leading bleached areas on the skin. These areas can spread. This condition is, however, treatable and must be protected from ultraviolet light exposure until those areas have begun to develop melanin again.
What is photosensitivity?
Photosensitivity is a condition in which the skin reacts abnormally to light, especially UV rays or sunlight, due to the presence of medication, hormones, or heavy metals in the body. At Tan & Tone America we have a photosensitizing medication list on or around the tanning counter.
What are the rashes/itching that occurs on the body after exposure?
It is not a skin disease, but a dry skin or photosensitive reaction. They are often caused by a combination of heat from the lamps, a lack of sufficient melanin in the skin being tanned, and UV light. Both irritations usually subside within several days after tanning has stopped. You may also experience irritation and rash as you tan with perfumes or body spray high in alcohol. If you break out in a rash in an isolated area, most likely it is a chemical reaction to something you have on your body. If you break out in a rash on your entire body, most likely you were overexposed, allergic to the sun, or on photosensitive medication.
